Arthur Yap (1943-2006) is widely acknowledged as one of Singapore's top poets. His first collection of poems, Only Lines, was published in 1971, for which he received the National Book Development Council of Singapore's first award for poetry. His subsequent collections of verse included man snake apple and other poems and commonplace. In 1983, he was awarded the prestigious Southeast Asia Write Award in Bangkok and the Cultural Medallion for Literature in Singapore. He was also a prolific painter. His selected, the space of city trees: selected poems, was released by Skoob Books in 2000.
