ash wednesday, riding downward
break of day, the first
eye-strain, light angled in clamouring slats, flesh fought from flesh, stiffness still-wrestled, emerging and failing, going and coming into the false settlement of cool air, heart churned toward the hurry of dust, melding body to land, body to bed frame, rebellion of wailing and peace, fury and wonder, how much loathing there is to dispatch in a wilderness of psychology, invisible finger smudged across a forehead, a face.
